Founded in April of 2021, our goal is to provide support in English, math, art, music, and computer skills to children at Hopestart International in Jeremie Haiti, in hopes that they secure a better future for themselves and their communities.
The Haiti Tutoring Club has fundraised and donated 10 laptops to Haiti Hopestart International along with help from other clubs. We have a tutoring team of around 50 tutors to provide weekly 1-on-1 tutoring sessions every Saturday morning on English, math, computer skills, art, and singing. Winter and summer camps are also available.
Our partner in Haiti is Hopestart International, located in Jérémie. They serve in 4 major areas of work:
Children’s Home (34 children): Provide shelter, nourishment, education and health care to children so they may grow, thrive and lead.
Well-Drilling: Provide clean water to local communities in Haiti
Feeding Program (11 locations): Provide nutritious meals 5x a week for children who would otherwise go hungry.
Village Homes (13): Providing housing for families made homeless by natural disasters to keep them together, safe, and healthy.
I founded Love Thy Neighbor International amidst the pandemic, whose goal is to provide long-term beneficial aid and impact disadvantaged and underserved communities both on a local and global scale. By partnering with Hopestart International, based in Jeremie, Haiti, I provided weekly 1 on 1 tutoring sessions to the kids in their Children's Home, which later expanded to include math, computer skills, art, and singing. Throughout the years I have worked with them, I have been able to tutor around 20 students, donate $2300, and have bolstered my knowledge of events going on around the world and the lives of other people.
In the summer before my Junior year, I was given the opportunity to visit Haiti in person, which was a true blessing. Over the course of 10 days, I traveled to the town of Jeremie, met the kids at Hopestart, donated to the local community, volunteered on Hopestart’s projects, and learned about the culture and community in Haiti. I was truly humbled by the conditions in Haiti. Although the situation was grim and seemed hopeless, I learned that not every problem could be solved by me alone. The tutoring I would provide would help the children at Hopestart, giving them more opportunities to get jobs and support their own communities. The relationships I built with them would give them support and encouragement to benefit others and their country. It’s not something that can be solved overnight, as problems have plagued Haiti for centuries. Although I do not have it in my power right now to make big changes, I can take small victories one step at a time. By showing them my dedication to making things better, I hope that they themselves can also want things to be better.
