Youth Crew is a competitive high school program for students aged 15-18 in the San Francisco Bay Area who want to work with marine mammals! It involves a three-step application process, ultimately placing you on a crew with other adult volunteers to care for patients. From January through June. Over the summer, youth crew members act as "Conservation Ambassadors" to educate visitors about conservation and what we do at the center
Alex has applied and was admitted as one of the volunteers this year (2024 Youth Crew)
Alex has been apart of Sunday night crew, helping out weekly from 4/5 pm all the way to sometimes 11 pm. Job duties include washing equipment, sorting fish, cleaning animal pens, feeding and restraining animals, and recording observations
From June to August, Alex became a youth education, teaching the public about a plethora of topics. These topics ranged from how sea level rise affects Hawaiian monk seals, to how we can lower our carbon emissions in order to stop harmful algal blooms. When engaging with visitors, Alex aimed to leave them empowered - with a sense that they can take the next step in conservation, because they can!
Summer Symposium on Ocean Science and Plastic Waste, Sustainable Plankton
This was the end-of-year event for Youth Crew, where we created and showcased our own summer engagement tools! Alex showcased DIY aquarium appliances - a protein skimmer, plankton farm, and a rain machine - that were created purely from trash.
